Nice kid, stupid school

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 20, 2012, 12:15 PM

Read an interesting story, [link]

An american fifth grader had to give a school report in an assembly on any topic he wanted. He decidef to talk about gay rights to marry after hearing the President talk about it. Nice kid thinks that if you love someone, no matter what gender, you should marry.

Cute thing was he didn't want to say "sex" so he called it "same gender marridge"

However his school was like, AW HELL NO!

He read an animal cruelty essay instead...good cause but...was his freedom of speech taken from him?

I know you yanks are real touchy on this subject so please give me some feedback ^^

I sounded like he's first amendment right was taking from him. In this day and age, why shouldn't it be okay to write a report like that? I know there are some people out there who feel same sex marriage is a shame and not real in Gods eyes, but seriously, its childish that a report like that is banned.

Some people might have been uncomfortable, but its school and last time I checked, a school is a place for higher learning and to educate the future rulers of the world about the world around them. How can we teach the world, when schools ban certain things. They need to be educated in just grammar or history, but also public opinion, topics and other things that cause sparks to fly between race, gender, sexual orientations, etc.. Its so idiotic to do so.

Yes that kid's rights were taken away. Unfortunately freedom of speech doesn't always apply in school's, otherwise the student journalists could write anything they want in the school newspapers. Usually the principal is the main editor of what gets written or spoken about in a school, but all that changes in college when students are free to write or speak whatever topics they want.

Well, I would say that his freedom of speech was taken away from the poor guy.
He probably thinks he did something wrong! D;
Loving someone with the same gender is not wrong!
I think its cute. cx

The school did say ANY topic, so he did have the right to read his report. They had no right to take it away.

Usa-ian here. We have a saying that 'your freedom to throw a punch ends at my nose'... which basically, you have the right to say/do/ect anything as long as it doesn't harm others. Now, given that we still force people to wear clothing and don't let gays get married, it's clear that we don't follow the ideal, but! Yes, the boy had his rights taken all the way away. Look at the news story, I see he's black, and that's not even a surprise.

Still I have to say I'm impressed that a child doesn't see a problem with gays...it's just the idiot adults who are trying to drill the negative stuff into his head.

Oh, our younger generations are getting more and more liberal, as a rule. Children in fundamentalist cultures tend to be conservative, but even then, they often leave it as they grow up. But yeah, the adults... they cause troubles, like this.
